SKU Ecc-Eva-1-158013T-1

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, a Zeon cup (or simply Zeon, from the Greek word “ζέον” meaning “boiling” or “hot”) is a small liturgical vessel used during the Divine Liturgy.

The Zeon Cup is used to hold hot water, which the priest adds to the chalice just before Communion.

This act symbolizes the living warmth of the Holy Spirit and the Resurrected Christ—that Christ is alive, not cold or dead. Just before communion, the priest heats water and pours it into the Zeon cup.

While pouring it into the chalice (which already contains the consecrated wine and bread), he says:
“The fervor of faith, full of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Zeon cups are usually small metal vessels, often made of silver or brass. They may have a small spout or lip for easy pouring.  The addition of the hot water represents the divine warmth and life given to the faithful through the Eucharist. It's a small but meaningful element of Orthodox liturgical tradition that underscores the living, spiritual nature of Holy Communion.
