Candle Stands

In the Greek Orthodox Church, candelabra (Greek: “κανδήλια” or “πολυκάνδηλα”) are sacred lighting fixtures used to symbolize divine light and the presence of God. There are several distinct types, each serving a specific liturgical and symbolic function:

  • Πολυκάνδηλο (Polykandilo) – Central Chandelier - The large hanging chandelier suspended in the center of the nave.
  • Κανδήλια (Kandilia) – Hanging Oil Lamps - Small individual glass oil lamps placed before icons, on iconostases, and over the Holy Altar.
  • Κηροπήγια (Keropígia) – Standing Candle Stands - Freestanding or wall-mounted candleholders found near icons, in front of the iconostasis, and throughout the nave.
  • Δίσκος ή Πολυέλαιος Αγίας Τραπέζης (Altar Candelabra) - Two or more tall, ornate candle stands placed on either side of the Holy Altar.
