- Saints Cosmas and Damian, revered as the Holy Unmercenaries (Greek: Ἅγιοι Ἀνάργυροι), are prominent figures in the Greek Orthodox Church. They were twin brothers and physicians who lived during the 3rd century in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). Raised in Christian piety by their mother, Saint Theodota, they dedicated their lives to healing the sick without accepting any form of payment, strictly adhering to the command of Christ: “Freely you have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
- Their selfless medical service extended to both humans and animals, and they were known for attributing their healing abilities to the power of prayer and the Holy Spirit. Their reputation as compassionate healers and miracle workers spread widely, leading many to embrace Christianity.
- In Orthodox iconography, Saints Cosmas and Damian are often depicted together, symbolizing their brotherhood and shared mission. They are typically shown holding medical instruments or containers of medicine, reflecting their roles as physicians. Their icons serve as visual reminders of their virtues: charity, humility, and unwavering faith. Such icons are venerated by the faithful, especially those seeking healing or involved in medical professions.
• • The veneration of Saints Cosmas and Damian is widespread in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, with their feast day celebrated on November 1. They are honored as patron saints of physicians, surgeons, and pharmacists, and their legacy continues to inspire acts of compassion and service within the medical community.
The icon reproductions are created by iconographer monks of various Greek Orthodox monasteries in Greece and all images are approved replications by the Greek Orthodox Church. As icons are considered to be the Gospel in image, these images are accurate and true Orthodox renderings, not second-hand interpretations.
These icon reproductions are prepared in the traditional Orthodox style: a fine detailed image is mounted on solid wood. The mounted image is covered with shellac to provide the luster of a traditional byzantine icon. The icon is then covered with multiple layers of varnish to coat the image with a protective layer that shields the colors from fading and protects from humidity. This Icon also has a hook on the back enabling it to be hung on walls.
These icons are a true Orthodox image approved by the Eastern Orthodox Archdiocese.
