Filakto
The Greek word filakto means something that keeps you safe by chasing away evil. Filakto are small cloth pouches or amulets that are usually adorned with a cross and are worn to ward off evil and bring protection. They are filled with materials considered holy, such as dried flowers from Holy Friday, pieces of the Holy Altar vestments, or splinters of wood from iconostasis.
Filakto are typically given to newborns to protect them from evil, and many adults continue to wear it. Babies usually wear their filakto pinned to the clothes at the left shoulder blade, while adults can wear it anywhere or carry it in a pocket.
